The Creative Writing Field Guide: Introduction

Can you write one word next to another? Fantastic. You can be a writer!

There are some people out there who will tell you that writers are individuals who have an inherent talent for stringing sentences together and storytelling. They’ll say you need to have an extensive vocabulary and a strong knowledge of grammar. You might even be judged if you didn’t pursue higher education to learn more about creative writing.

None of that matters.

You can become a great storyteller with an average understanding of language, a thesaurus, and a good imagination.

I’ll be honest with you, writing a book is difficult. It takes time and patience. You’ll probably sit at your desk, stare at your computer, and wonder why you even thought writing a book was a good idea.

Then, if writing it wasn’t hard enough, you’ll be left to edit every last word you wrote.

This book is for writers who are either new to the craft or who just want a refresher on the process of creating a coherent novel. It is important to note that every author has their own style and way of getting from first draft to published work. This guide is your starting point but you’ll likely need to adapt the concepts to your needs.

As we discuss writing, the guide will not condone the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to write books. However, we will address topics of using software to catch grammatical errors and other small mistakes. With AI being a divisive topic, it’s important to acknowledge its existence and where most writers are drawing the line.

I’m not going to draw out this introduction any further because I know you’re excited to start putting your ideas down on paper (or on the screen).

So, without further ado, welcome to The Creative Writing Field Guide!
