Donut Bread

October 29, 2024

What happens when a donut decides to become a loaf of bread? Magic, that’s what! With the same pillowy texture and a hint of sweetness, this bread is perfect for those who can’t get enough of that fresh bakery vibe. Let’s turn donut dough into your new favorite loaf!

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
3/4 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 large egg

Homemade Sweet Rolls or Sweet Buns

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it’s foamy.
  2. Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead and Rise: Knead the dough on a floured surface or in a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 5–7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1–1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
  4. Shape for Loaf: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and shape it. For a simple loaf, roll the dough into a tight log and place it into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan. For rolls, divide into 8–10 equal pieces, roll into balls, and place in a greased round or square baking pan, slightly apart to allow room for rising.
  5. Second Rise: Cover the pan with a towel and let the dough rise again for about 30 minutes, until it’s puffed up and nearly doubled.
  6. Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 20–25 minutes for rolls or 30–35 minutes for a loaf, until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  7. Optional Glaze: While warm, brush the top with melted butter and, if you like, sprinkle with a touch of sugar for extra sweetness.
