Sometimes, the best culinary ideas come from unexpected pairings. Enter the hot dog grilled cheese—a bold twist on two all-time favorites. By using a hot dog bun as the bread and featuring crispy grilled hot dogs inside, this recipe turns leftovers into a gourmet-level snack. Perfect for a quick lunch, game-day treat, or a fun spin on comfort food, this dish proves that buns aren’t just for burgers and dogs anymore!
Ingredients
- 1 hot dog
- 1 hot dog bun
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese blend)
- 1 tablespoon butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon mustard or ketchup (optional, for spreading inside)
Instructions
- Prepare the Hot Dog:
- Slice the hot dog in half lengthwise so you have two thinner pieces.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a small pat of butter.
- Place the hot dog halves cut-side down and cook for 2–3 minutes until browned. Flip and cook the other side for an additional 2 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- Butter the Bun:
- Spread the softened butter evenly on the outside surfaces of the hot dog bun.
- If you’d like, spread a thin layer of mustard or ketchup on the inside surfaces for extra flavor.
- Assemble the Grilled Cheese:
- Place the hot dog bun in the skillet buttered-side down.
- Open it slightly and sprinkle about half of the shredded cheddar cheese inside the bun.
- Lay the cooked hot dog halves on top of the cheese, then sprinkle the remaining cheese over the hot dogs.
- Cook the Grilled Cheese:
- Close the bun gently to create a sandwich and press it lightly with a spatula.
- Let it cook for about 2–3 minutes on one side, until golden brown and crispy. Carefully flip the sandwich using a spatula, pressing gently again, and cook for another 2–3 minutes until the cheese is fully melted and the outside is golden and toasty.
- Serve:
- Remove the hot dog grilled cheese from the skillet and let it cool slightly before cutting it in half.
- Serve immediately with a side of pickles, chips, or your favorite dipping sauce.
Tips
- For extra crunch, add a sprinkle of crushed potato chips inside the bun before closing it.
- Experiment with different cheeses like pepper jack or gouda for a unique flavor twist.
