Southern Spice Mix

October 29, 2024

Here’s a simple Southern spice mix to make your fried fish flavorful, crispy, and just the right amount of spicy! This blend works wonders on any white fish like catfish, tilapia, or trout. Use it as a dry rub or mix it into flour or cornmeal for a classic Southern crust. Let’s get cooking!

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp paprika (preferably smoked for extra depth)
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper (adjust to taste for spice level)
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground mustard (optional for a slight tang)
Blackened Seasoning

Instructions

  1. Mix the Spices: Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and stir until well mixed.
  2. Season the Fish:
    • For a dry rub: Pat your fish fillets dry, then sprinkle both sides generously with the spice mix.
    • For a breading mix: Combine this spice blend with 1 cup of flour or cornmeal (or a mix of both) to coat the fish before frying.
  3. Cooking Tip: Fry the fish at 350°F in a deep skillet or frying pan until golden brown and crispy (usually about 3–5 minutes per side, depending on thickness).

Storage

Store any leftover spice mix in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months.

This blend brings out a perfect Southern flavor: smoky, herby, and with a kick of heat. Enjoy your crispy, golden fried fish!
