Spam Musubi Recipe
Let’s be honest—Spam doesn’t always get the love it deserves. But in Hawaii, it’s a superstar, and the crown jewel of its fame? Spam Musubi. This handheld snack is the ultimate mashup of salty, sweet, and umami, wrapped up in a seaweed hug. It’s like sushi got a tropical upgrade.
Ingredients
- 1 can Spam (classic or flavored, your choice)
- 3 cups cooked sushi rice
- 2-3 sheets of nori (seaweed), cut into strips
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp mirin (optional, for extra sweetness)
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- Plastic wrap or a Spam can (for shaping)
Instructions
- Prepare the Spam:
- Open the Spam can and slice the block into 8 equal pieces.
- Make the sauce:
- In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, sugar, and mirin until the sugar dissolves.
- Cook the Spam:
- Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the Spam slices and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown.
- Pour the soy sauce mixture over the Spam slices and cook for another minute, turning to coat. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Shape the rice:
- Divide the cooked sushi rice into 8 portions. Use plastic wrap or a clean Spam can (lined with plastic wrap) to shape each portion into a rectangular block.
- Assemble the musubi:
- Place a strip of nori shiny side down. Lay a rice block in the center, top with a slice of glazed Spam, and wrap the nori around the musubi. Seal the nori ends with a dab of water.
- Serve:
- Serve warm or at room temperature. Perfect for picnics, lunchboxes, or sneaky midnight snacks!
